I have been on Pinterest for years and continue to marvel at the ingeniousness of its creators. There’s no better site to become inspired, stimulated or to find what motivates you! A few months ago I created a Pinterest board called “
Decorating with Abstract Art” and have become very focused (I won’t admit obsessed) with finding inspiring rooms that display abstract art. As an
abstract photographer I love to see the different ways people integrate abstract pieces into their décor. So often when I’m really struck by a room with abstract art on Pinterest, I click on it to find it originates from Luxe magazine. Here’s an example…
How can a space that is so simple be so appealing? I’ll give you my take:
- A neutral modern background and clean lines: notice the lack of baseboards, the straight white draperies that blend seamlessly with the wall color and lay nearly flush with the smooth, soft colored floor.
- Combined with a few classic elements: the smooth curve of an iconic yet simple side chair, the unassuming picture frames.
- And then a splash of juxtaposition: the decorative vintage/antique desk and the bold red and black color of the abstract art.
In addition to the “neutral modern / bold decorative” contrast there are two imprecise elements precisely chosen to keep our attention:
- Notice the chair and the painting, both red, but with slightly different hues. If they matched perfectly we would be bored.
- Notice the small picture placed on the left wall. What would the room look like without it? Perhaps a little more predictable?
As may be expected the bold red and black abstract art is what first caught my eye, however the successful combination of this art within the room is what makes me want to stay.
