Purple Rain

April 26, 2016

With the passing of Prince, it seems appropriate to feature an image that I created several years ago titled “Purple Rain”.  This abstract photograph was taken from a serving tray that had a printed purple image under glass.  The section of the tray that I photographed had water damage and it created a watercolor effect with an abstract image hidden within the frame.

Whether you like the color purple or not, the different shades and hues of purple can add a fresh look to your room and offer an unexpected accent.  It pairs well with silver, gray, brown, cream and other colors.  Here are some examples, compliments of K. B. Hansel Interiors, where this skilled interior designer has artfully incorporated shades of purple as accents in sophisticated interiors.

As we’re remembering a music icon this week, look for ways to incorporate purple in your home.
Below is another piece of abstract artwork from the same tray titled “Fantasia’s Garden”.

Looking for What We Cannot See; Black Holes & Gravitational Waves

February 16, 2016

Scientists have detected gravitational waves that are a result of two black holes merging 1.3 billion years ago.  They have detected something we cannot see!  This event will give us significant insight into the universe.

I’m excited about the confirmation of gravitational waves because this type of discovery is one of the motivating factors in my abstract photography—that is to look beyond what we can ‘see’, to know and trust that there is more in life than what we observe with our eyes or other senses.

I love the irony of my abstract art being a visual medium when the roots of my motivation are non-visual.  I’m more excited than ever to look deeply and discover facets in photography that may inspire others to challenge the perceptions our senses create and look for what we cannot see.

More information about the gravitational wave discovery can be found here: http://bit.ly/1Qu1lWV.

Winter White

January 26, 2016

Colorado Snow Scenic View

Snow falls silently outside my window and I marvel, like a child, at the wonder, and the whiteness of it all.  I’m inspired by the white of winter in the Rocky Mountains and this inspiration has found its way into my abstract photography.  Snow adds a layer of clarity and quietness to my surroundings.  It beckons calm, it covers flaws, and creates a white frame around what is.  The river flows with depth and vigor nestled between banks of snow, the sky shines brighter as the sun glints off the white mountain tops, and the night sky is more dramatic because of the ambient light of the snow.  All these aspects were the inspiration for the macro photograph below, Boreas*, which is Greek for Winter God.  It captures the white, the wind and the blue that tinges the edges of the winter landscape.  I hope you find your inspiration in the power of winter.

* BOREAS was the purple-winged god of the north wind, one of the four directional Anemoi (wind-gods). He was also the god of winter, who swept down from the cold northern mountains of Thrake, chilling the air with his icy breath. To the north, beyond his mountain home, lay Hyperborea, a land of eternal spring which was never touched by the god's cold wind.

Look Studio decorates the new Westin DIA

October 21, 2015

Two years ago, over 200 Colorado artists submitted artwork to the Westin for consideration in the 519 room Gensler-designed hotel under construction at the Denver International Airport. The selection committee was looking for contemporary art that represented nature in the West. The philosophy behind the hotel’s interior design was intriguing:

“Our well-being is affected by an innate need to connect with nature and link to the natural world. Accents and design details in the hotel are inspired by the natural world—recalling abstracted biomorphic shapes, textures, materials and themes (fractals, geologic patterning and micropatterning).” (Source: DIA Art & Culture Program)

In July 2013, I was selected as one of 10 artists to have their art featured in the private rooms and corridors of this notable hotel. Their mission statement spoke to me and seemed like a good fit for my photography. I was thrilled when five of my images were chosen for this beautiful hotel.

Over two years later, the Westin’s thoughtfully planned hotel will open on November 19, 2015. DIA is hosting room previews and festivities on November 14th and 15th.

Also of interest is the incredible sculpture by Patrick Marold of Denver, CO. He has created a $1.5m large scale public space sculpture out of 250 beetle-kill logs from Southern Colorado. Patrick’s work is truly inspiring: http://patrickmarold.com. His appreciation of reclaimed materials speaks to the genesis of my photography and I’m honored to be part of a facility dedicated to the renewal experience of nature.

Here’s a sneak preview of what they selected:

Thank you. As always, I appreciate your support!
